We are excited to announce the Africa Mercy has safely returned to the port of Toamasina this morning, marking the beginning of our fifth field service in Madagascar. This mission will bring even more hope and healing to the Malagasy people through vital safe surgeries, medical training, and long-lasting improvements to the local healthcare system. We can't wait to see the incredible impact we’ll make together in this new chapter!
Since our first mission to the island nation in 1996, we have conducted over 11,000 life-changing surgeries and more than 65,000 successful dental procedures in Madagascar. Additionally, over 2,500 medical professionals have been trained to enhance local healthcare systems.
During this 2025 field service, we will collaborate with the Ministry of Health to work across 12 regions of Madagascar to select patients in need of surgical care. Work is already underway to prepare for the first surgeries, planned for March 2025. Patient registration and selection is taking place in various locations across the country, ensuring that those in need of surgical care will have every opportunity to be considered.
Sherif Emil, our International Chief Medical Officer, shared his thoughts on the mission, saying, “Mercy Ships is glad to return to Madagascar to continue nurturing its long-standing relationship with the Malagasy people and to provide surgical care where it is needed most. We will build on what we accomplished together so far and continue to lay the foundation for a better future of surgical care for the nation.”
As we embark on this new season of hope and healing, Mercy Ships remains deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our staff and crew. Your work and involvement helps improve the lives of individuals, strengthen communities, and enhance the healthcare systems in the countries we serve.
We are blessed to continue this mission, following the example of Jesus Christ, who calls us to serve others with love and compassion. With His guidance and strength, we look forward to a successful mission and the positive impact we will bring together in Madagascar this year!
